REM has been engaged by Chatham Rock Phosphate Ltd to provide resource and environmental management assistance for a major project involving deep sea extraction of phosphate nodules from the sea bed of the Chatham Rise approximately 600 km offshore from Canterbury, at water depths of 350 - 400 m. This work includes being part of the project management team, briefing sub-consultants involved in environmental and realted investigations, assisting with the undertaking of the project consultation strategy, and assistance with preparation and coordination of the AEE which will accompany an application for a mining licence (Q4 2012) under the Continental Shalf Act. Associated with this is briefing the client on potential developments in the area of an environmental planning and/or consents regime for the EEZ, and associated developments with the EPA or other possible administrators of any new regime.
