New Zealand is blessed with significant precious and industrial metal resources in its EEZ.

Currently, there is increasing interest in mining these resources.  REM is at the forefront of advising on the environmental issues associated with offshore seabed mining, in particular mining beyond the Coastal Marine Area and within the EEZ.

Currently there is no environmental permitting regime within the EEZ outside the Coastal Marine Area.  REM has been included within the Government's consultation programme for the proposed establishment of an environmental consents regime for EEZ seabed mining, a recognition of the expertise REM has in this area.

REM is currenly assisting a major offshore mining company  with the preparation and coordination of an Environmental Impact Assessment and other environmental issues associated with its proposed mining for precious and other metals in the Kermadec Arch.
